Inkscape and X11

While attempting to install the open source vector graphics program Inkscape, I found that I needed to install the latest version of X11 (a window system used on Unix systems as well as Mac OS X). However, I couldn’t easily find the installer on Apple’s site, but I did discover it buried on my MacBook Pro Install Disc 1 at: /System/Installation/Packages/X11User.pkg. It’s also likely available for installation during system setup and while booted off the disc, however no reboot is necessary to install and run X11.

  1. btw inkscape sucks. I so wanted to switch away form adobes expensive software and use free stuff. But inkscape just plan sucks, and gimp… also sucks :-(

  2. You’re an Illustrator pro, though. For someone like me who doesn’t yet know Illustrator, Inkscape is a great program. I spent about 4 hours getting used to it yesterday, and it’s really quite nice. Being able to easily toggle the point/node type with the control key makes using the Pen tool in Photoshop seem outdated. So far, I’m loving it! I’ve already made a few vector graphics with it, some of which will be revealed soon.

Should use Xara (xara dot com). It’s priced extremely fairly and can do everything Adobe’s clunky, inefficient software can, but about 10 times more quickly. It’s also the fastest rendering software in the world, and is *extremely* efficient with system resources and photo handling–unlike any other software out there. Windows only though. The (few) good elements of Inkscape were inspired by Xara’s software.

I googled “inkscape sucks what the hell” and this was one of the top hits. =)

I am trying to use my inkscape app, which came with my bamboo tablet and is already installed, but each time I try to open it, it asks me to install x11 for panther and sends me to an invalid web address. when i find, download, and try to install the update, I am told my system already has a newer version installed.

Any idea how I can fix this?

Yes, just don’t use Inkscape. It sucks, no matter what the Linux fanboys will tell you, compared to other vector programs it’s abysmal.

That’s not true, I’m a Linux fanboy and I will wholeheartedly agree that Inkscape sucks, but please.. don’t try to drag down Gimp in your slander. Uncalled for.
